Dallas to Nashville is about 660 miles — I-30 east through Texarkana and Little Rock, then I-40 east through Memphis into Middle Tennessee. Around 10 hours behind the wheel, which is short enough that one driver can legally cover it in a single day.

The shortest long-distance lane we run

Federal hours-of-service rules cap a commercial driver at 11 hours of driving inside a 14-hour on-duty window. At roughly 10 hours, Dallas to Nashville is one of the few interstate routes that fits inside a single legal driving day — which is why this lane behaves differently from our California and Chicago runs.

In practice that usually means a 1 to 3 day transit, and on a smaller shipment with a clean load-out it can be next-day delivery. It is still a delivery spread rather than a fixed date, but it is the tightest spread on our board and the one that most often lands on the day you hoped for.

We are a carrier, not a broker — check it in a minute

Long-distance moving has more brokers than any other corner of this trade. A broker takes your deposit, sells your job to whichever carrier bids lowest, and disappears the moment something goes wrong. You booked one company and a different truck shows up.

We hold our own operating authority. The crew that loads your Dallas home is our crew, the truck is our truck, and the driver who pulls into Nashville works for us. Put US DOT 2783472 into the FMCSA’s SAFER lookup and you can see our authority, our insurance and our safety record. Do it for us, and do it for whoever else is quoting you — it is the most useful minute you will spend on this move.

Size-up

What a Dallas to Nashville move has to plan around

The drive is the easy part on this lane. Nashville is where it gets particular — reserving kerb space is expensive enough that it is worth avoiding, a decade of infill building has left half the city on narrow lots with shared driveways, and downtown runs on an event calendar that will decide your arrival time whether you consult it or not.

The Nashville end decides the day. We ask the access questions at the survey rather than at your kerb.
Parking Nashville charges real money for kerb space

Nashville has no cheap consumer permit for a moving truck. Reserving a lane or a stretch of street runs through NDOT’s ePermits system as a lane or street closure — around $160 for up to five days, with a minimum of two business days notice. Occupy the right of way without one and the fee triples to roughly $480, plus a penalty per day.

That changes the calculus. On a Green Hills or Brentwood house with a real driveway, we simply do not need a permit. On a Gulch tower or a 12South street with no off-street parking, we do — and it belongs on your estimate rather than as a surprise. Give us the address at the survey and we will tell you which of the two you are.

Note: NDOT updated its right-of-way fee schedule on 1 July 2026. We confirm the current figure at the time of booking.

Access Tall-skinnies, shared drives and no alleys

A decade of infill has filled East Nashville, The Nations, 12South, Sylvan Park and Germantown with tall-skinny homes — two or three storeys on a half lot, often two units sharing one narrow driveway, with a long straight staircase running the full height of the house.

Unlike Chicago, Nashville largely has no alleys to load from, so the street or the driveway is the whole answer. Our trucks are 26 to 28 feet and need 13 feet of overhead clearance and a surface rated for 26,000 pounds. Where a shared drive or a hillside street cannot take that, the load transfers to a smaller shuttle for the last stretch — a real cost line we would rather quote than discover.

Timing Downtown runs on an event calendar

Nashville is the only city we deliver into where the sports and music schedule is a scheduling input. A Titans or Predators home game, CMA Fest, a marathon or a festival weekend closes streets and clogs the Broadway and SoBro grid for hours at a stretch.

If you are landing downtown, in the Gulch or in SoBro, tell us the date early and we will check it against the calendar before we commit a window. A midweek morning delivery downtown is a different job from a Saturday afternoon one, and the difference is measured in hours of crew time you would otherwise pay for.

Building rules COI, elevator, dock

The downtown, Gulch and Midtown towers run the same discipline as Uptown Dallas: a certificate of insurance naming the association and the management company, a freight elevator reserved to a fixed window, and an assigned dock.

Call management the week you book and confirm the COI wording, the elevator window and which days moves are permitted. A certificate naming the wrong entity is as useless as none at all, and the elevator window is what sets the crew size we send.

Season Ice, storms and what cannot ride

Middle Tennessee gets less snow than Chicago but handles ice worse, and a single winter ice event can shut the hills in Green Hills and Brentwood for a day or two. Spring brings severe weather season across the whole I-40 corridor, which occasionally moves a departure rather than a delivery.

Hazardous goods cannot travel at all — aerosols, propane and other compressed gases, paint and solvents, pool chemicals, fertilizer and ammunition. Federal rule, not house policy. Our crews also cannot disconnect or reconnect water or gas lines, change a dryer cord, or assemble cribs — and cannot pack on load day. Packing is booked ahead as its own service.

Services

What we handle on a Dallas to Nashville move

Packing, loading, the line haul, storage and delivery under one roof and on one bill of lading — no transfer to a third-party carrier along the way.

Professional packing

A shorter haul means less time on the road, not less care. Cartons still have to survive a full day of interstate vibration and a staircase at the other end that runs three storeys straight up.

Loading & unloading

Pad-wrapping, stretch film, dollies and floor protection at both ends. Signed inventory before the doors close in Dallas, checked off with you at the door in Nashville.

Storage in transit

Climate-controlled storage in our own Dallas facility for the Nashville closing that slips or the lease that starts three weeks late. One company handles the load, the storage and the delivery rather than three.

Commercial & corporate

Office and employee relocations from DFW to Middle Tennessee, sequenced around your downtime, with consistent documentation for a relocation program.

Priced by weight, not by the hour

Under federal rules an interstate move is priced on the weight of your shipment and the distance it travels, plus the services you add. That is why a Dallas-to-Nashville quote and a Dallas-to-Plano quote are not comparable numbers.

The 110% rule

On a non-binding estimate, an interstate carrier cannot require more than 110% of the written estimate at delivery. Anything above that is billed afterwards, not demanded on your doorstep. Ask every mover quoting this lane to confirm it in writing.

Your right to the scale

Because the price is built on weight, you are entitled to know that weight. You may observe the weighings and request a reweigh before unloading. We hand the tickets over without being asked — a number you cannot check is not a price, it is a claim.

Specialty items

Gun safes, pianos, fine art, china and antiques move with specialized dollies and technique rather than improvised muscle, and are flagged on the estimate before the date rather than on it. An additional charge applies. Nashville sees more instruments than most lanes — tell us about them early.

Coverage on a long haul

Released value protection at $0.60 per pound per item is included by federal minimum. Full Value Protection carries a substantially higher level of liability — worth comparing against your homeowner’s or renter’s policy before you decide.

Other Texas origins

We run the same lane out of our Fort Worth, Houston and Austin locations. See our Dallas long-distance movers for how interstate moves are handled generally.

Destination

Delivering across Nashville and Middle Tennessee

From a crew's point of view Nashville breaks into about four different delivery jobs, and which one you are moving into matters more to your day than the mileage does. We ask which one at the survey.

660 mi I-30 east to I-40, Dallas to Middle Tennessee
1–3 days the tightest transit window on our board — short enough for one driver in a legal day
$160 NDOT lane closure permit where a Nashville street has to be reserved
2 days minimum business-day notice on that permit, which is why we ask for the address early

Constraint: the calendar

Downtown, SoBro and the Gulch

Tower deliveries with a dock, a reserved freight elevator and a certificate of insurance — plus an event schedule that no other city on our board has. A game night or a festival weekend changes the arrival window, so we check the date before we commit one.

Constraint: the driveway

East Nashville, 12South, Sylvan Park and The Nations

Tall-skinny infill on half lots, frequently two units sharing one narrow drive, with a staircase running the full height of the house. No alleys to fall back on. This is where a shuttle or an NDOT permit is most likely to appear on your estimate.

Constraint: the grade

Green Hills, Belle Meade and Forest Hills

Larger homes, longer driveways and genuine hills. Usually straightforward for parking, which means no permit needed — but bigger crews, sometimes two trucks, and access that gets difficult fast in an ice event.

Constraint: the run

Franklin, Brentwood and the outer counties

Franklin, Brentwood, Mt. Juliet, Hendersonville, Murfreesboro and Spring Hill. The most straightforward deliveries in the region — driveways, real kerb space and room to work. The variables are HOA rules on truck staging and the extra run time out from the city.

One thing worth knowing. A Nashville address is not always Metro Nashville. Belle Meade, Berry Hill, Forest Hills, Oak Hill and Goodlettsville are separate incorporated cities sitting inside Davidson County with their own governments, and Franklin, Brentwood and Mt. Juliet are different counties entirely. That decides whose permit applies and how far ahead, which is why we ask for the exact delivery address rather than the neighborhood name.

Frequently asked questions about moving from Dallas to Nashville

How long does a move from Dallas to Nashville take?
One to three days in transit for most shipments, and on a smaller load with a clean load-out it can be next-day. The drive is about 660 miles and roughly 10 hours, which fits inside the federal 11-hour daily driving limit — so unlike our California and Chicago lanes, this one does not require a second day on the road. You will still be given a delivery spread rather than a fixed date, but it is the tightest one we quote.

Do I need a permit for a moving truck in Nashville?
It depends entirely on your street. Nashville has no cheap consumer permit — reserving a lane or a stretch of street goes through NDOT’s ePermits system at around $160 for up to five days, with a minimum of two business days notice, and occupying the right of way without one runs roughly $480 plus a daily penalty. If you have a driveway, you almost certainly do not need one. If you are downtown, in the Gulch or on a 12South street with no off-street parking, you probably do. Tell us the address at your survey and we will tell you which you are.

Can you deliver into a downtown Nashville or Gulch high-rise?
Yes. Expect a certificate of insurance naming the association and the management company, a freight elevator reserved to a fixed window, and an assigned dock. Send us the building’s requirements when you book and we will have the certificate issued before the date. We also check your date against the Titans, Predators and festival calendar — a Broadway-adjacent delivery on a game night is a materially different job.

Are you a broker or an actual moving company?
A carrier. We hold our own federal operating authority under US DOT 2783472 and MC #1016781, and we run our own trucks and crews on this lane with no transfer to a third-party carrier en route. You can verify that in the FMCSA SAFER system in about a minute — and you should do the same for every other company quoting you.

My new place is a tall-skinny with a shared driveway. Is that a problem?
It is a planning question, not a problem. Two units sharing one narrow drive means we may not be able to put a 26-foot truck where the door is, and a three-storey staircase changes crew size and hours. Both are fine if we know at the survey. Both are expensive if we find out on the day.

What happens if my Nashville place is not ready when the truck arrives?
Tell us as early as you can and we arrange storage in transit at our own climate-controlled Dallas facility, then deliver when your date firms up. On a lane this short that is usually a small adjustment rather than a major one — but arranged in advance it is a planned line on your estimate, and improvised it is not.

What cannot travel on the truck to Nashville?
Hazardous goods are prohibited by federal rule — aerosols, propane and other compressed gases, paint and solvents, pool chemicals, fertilizer and ammunition. Instruments, amplifiers and recording equipment can travel, but tell us about them at the survey so they are crated and priced properly rather than wrapped as furniture.

How far ahead should I book a Dallas to Nashville move?
Earlier than a local move, and earlier still for a summer or month-end date. Because the transit is short, this lane fills faster than the long hauls do — a truck and driver are committed for two or three days rather than a week, so the calendar moves quickly. If your building restricts move days or your street needs an NDOT permit, sort those first and book around them.

Tell us the inventory, the access and the date

Whether you are landing in an East Nashville tall-skinny, a Gulch tower, a Green Hills house or a place out in Franklin, we will put a written estimate in front of you — binding or non-binding, your choice, both in writing — with the Nashville access questions asked before the date rather than on it.
