First, a quick tip on ratings
Do not judge a district by one letter grade alone. Sites like Niche grade whole districts. But single schools inside the same district can be much stronger or weaker than that grade.
The Texas Education Agency also rates schools each year. The smart move is to look at the exact campus your address feeds into, not just the district name.
Dallas ISD: know the campus and the magnets
Dallas ISD covers most of the city. It is large, with about 235 schools and around 139,000 students. Its overall Niche grade is a B.
That B hides a lot. Some Dallas ISD schools rank among the best in the country. Others are average. The key with Dallas ISD is to know the specific campus and to look at the magnet options.
The Dallas ISD magnet schools are the real standouts
Dallas ISD runs more than 30 magnet schools. These are what put Dallas on the national map.
The most famous is the School for the Talented and Gifted (TAG). It sits at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center in Oak Cliff, just south of downtown off I-35E. U.S. News ranks TAG the number one public high school in Texas and number eight in the nation. It was also named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2022.
TAG is small. It has about 550 students in grades 9 to 12, and 100% of them test proficient in reading and math.
If your child wants a shot at TAG, plan early. Applications open November 1 and close January 31. Dallas ISD residents get priority. In fact, no out-of-district students have been admitted in the last four years. So living inside Dallas ISD really matters here.
TAG is not the only strong choice. The School of Science and Engineering, in the same Townview center, is ranked number 23 in the country and is a top pick for STEM students. Other well-known magnets include the Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School, the Judge Barefoot Sanders Law Magnet, and Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
Highland Park ISD: top-rated, but pricey
Highland Park ISD is small and sits right in the middle of Dallas. It serves the Park Cities, which are Highland Park and University Park. It has about 6,600 students across seven campuses.
It is one of the top-rated districts in all of Texas, year after year. The catch is cost. Homes in the Park Cities are some of the most expensive in the area.
The best districts just outside the city
Many top districts sit just past the Dallas city line. If you are open to the suburbs, you have great options.
Coppell ISD is the number one rated district in Dallas County on Niche. Coppell High School ranks among the top 100 in Texas and is known for STEM.
Carroll ISD in Southlake is the highest-rated district in the whole Dallas and Fort Worth area. It earns A+ ratings and has about 8,400 students. It is known for both academics and sports. Homes here are expensive, often $900,000 and up.
Other strong suburban districts include Frisco ISD, Plano ISD, Allen ISD, and Prosper ISD. Rockwall ISD and Melissa ISD are also highly rated and a bit further out.
Want strong schools with a friendlier price tag? Look at Richardson ISD. Campuses in Richardson and Lake Highlands earn A ratings, and homes often run $400,000 to $900,000. That is well below Park Cities or Coppell.
Good schools and home prices go together
Every local knows this one: strong schools push up home prices. Texas Realtors data from 2026 shows buyers pay about $48 to $72 more per square foot for homes in A-rated districts.
