It is the most diverse city in the nation, the culinary capital of the South, and a place where high-brow art meets down-home hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are new to town, you arrived at the perfect time. Here is your guide to surviving your first Rodeo season and discovering what else Houston has to offer in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-big-welcome-surviving-your-first-rodeo\">The Big Welcome: Surviving Your First Rodeo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you moved here in early 2026, you are jumping right into the deep end. The <strong>Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo<\/strong> takes over the city for three weeks in March. It is the world\u2019s largest livestock show, but for locals, it\u2019s just called &#8220;The Rodeo.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be overwhelming for a newcomer. Here is the cheat sheet:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>It\u2019s Not Just One Event:<\/strong> The Rodeo is a massive festival at NRG Park. It includes a carnival, a livestock show (where you can see prize-winning cows and pigs), the actual rodeo competition, and a huge concert every night.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The BBQ Cook-Off comes first:<\/strong> The World\u2019s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest happens the weekend <em>before<\/em> the Rodeo officially starts. It\u2019s a huge party and the best way to kick off the season.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dress for Comfort:<\/strong> You will see plenty of cowboy boots and hats. Feel free to join in! But remember, NRG Park is huge. You will be walking miles on concrete. Downtown is home to the &#8220;Big Four&#8221;: The Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Symphony, and the Alley Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you prefer museums, the <strong>Museum District<\/strong> is one of the most beautiful parts of the city. It\u2019s very walkable\u2014a rare thing in Houston!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Menil Collection:<\/strong> This art museum is world-famous, always free, and located in a quiet neighborhood park.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH):<\/strong> It\u2019s massive. You can spend a whole day here wandering through the underground tunnels that connect the buildings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Houston Museum of Natural Science:<\/strong> Great for kids and adults. Everyone has their favorite local spot (often a gas station or a truck), and they are all delicious.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-getting-outdoors-yes-really\">Getting Outdoors (Yes, Really)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A common myth is that Houston is just a concrete jungle. That isn&#8217;t true. We have amazing green spaces\u2014you just have to know where to look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Buffalo Bayou Park<\/strong> is basically Houston\u2019s &#8220;Central Park.&#8221; It runs right through the city with amazing views of the skyline. You can rent a kayak, go for a run, or take a tour of the <strong>Cistern<\/strong>, a decommissioned underground water reservoir that looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Memorial Park<\/strong> is another favorite.
