The slow version is a Galleria high-rise where the truck stops at an assigned dock, one freight elevator is reserved for a three-hour window, and every carton makes the same long carry. Then there’s Houston’s own variable: this is a 600-square-mile city, and a move from Tomball to Pearland covers more ground than most cities have. Access and distance move the number far more than room count does.

A note on how you pay. Rates are generally quoted with a cash or check discount applied. They go wrong on a street parking clock most people don’t know exists, on private deed restrictions rather than a zoning map, and on the weather. Here’s what we plan around before the truck leaves Spring.

Houston puts a clock on a truck at the curb. City Code Chapter 26 makes it unlawful to park or stand a commercial vehicle on the street between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. except during the act of loading or unloading, and Section 26-96 bars large vehicles from parking on any street in a residential district — with active loading and unloading as the defense. Amendments approved in 2023 extended the two-hour street parking limit to large vehicles and raised the fine for large-vehicle parking violations from $60 to $150, and they closed the signage loophole so that a logo anywhere on a vehicle now makes it commercial. Our trucks are unambiguously commercial vehicles. The practical translation: the truck works continuously and then leaves. It does not sit at the curb between loads, and it does not stage overnight.

Downtown and Midtown have permitted loading zones. Chapter 26 also lets the city designate commercial vehicle loading zones and issue loading zone permits — a Class A permit runs a year and lets a permitted commercial vehicle use a loading zone, or one or two metered spaces where zones are unavailable or occupied. Those zones are strictly for the expeditious loading or unloading of property. If you’re moving in the urban core, the loading zone or the building’s own dock is the plan, not the nearest curb.

Houston has no zoning — your street is governed by deed restrictions. This is the thing that surprises people moving here from other states. There’s no zoning map to check; what governs your block is a private deed restriction and, usually, a civic association or HOA that enforces it. That’s who decides whether a truck can stage on the street, what hours work can happen, and whether a gate code or a gate attendant is involved. Call the civic association or management company the same week you book, not the week of the move.

High-rise and managed-community requirements. Towers and managed communities in Uptown and the Galleria, Downtown, Midtown, the Museum District and along Post Oak routinely require a certificate of insurance on file, a freight elevator reserved to a fixed window and a loading dock assigned before a crew is allowed on site. Confirm three things with the management office: whether a COI is required, exactly which entities have to be named on it, and how long the elevator window is. That window is what determines the crew size we assign.

Hurricane season and water. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and Houston’s flooding history is not theoretical. We watch the forecast on booked dates and will reschedule rather than load a household into a storm, and if you’re storing between homes, ask any storage provider — including us — where the facility sits relative to the floodplain. If your date lands in peak season, build a contingency day into your plan.

Truck size and clearance. Our fleet is fully enclosed box trucks — most are 26 feet, some are 28 feet plus the cab. A truck that size needs at least 13 feet of overhead clearance across the full 8-foot width, and every driving and parking surface has to hold 26,000 pounds. That rules out most Galleria and downtown parking garages, some carports, and soft ground after heavy rain — which in this city is a routine consideration rather than an occasional one.

The size of the metro itself. Houston covers roughly 600 square miles and spreads across Harris, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties. A move from The Woodlands to Sugar Land crosses the entire metro, and the travel fee reflects the distance actually covered, including tolled routes like the Sam Houston Tollway and the Grand Parkway where they’re the sensible way to go. We’d rather tell you that at the estimate than on the invoice.

The calendar. Demand stacks onto weekends, the first and last few days of the month when leases turn over, and the summer stretch when school calendars change. A midweek, mid-month date is easier to book and gives you a wider arrival window. Those figures cover the crew, the truck, loading and unloading, pad-wrapping, basic furniture disassembly and reassembly, and Texas-standard released value protection at $0.60 per pound per item. Packing services and materials, a fuel or travel fee based on total distance, specialty item handling, and Full Value Protection are billed separately. In a metro this large, the travel fee is worth asking about up front.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How much does a long-distance move from Houston cost?

It depends on the route and the size of the shipment. As a reference point, a recent full-service Houston to Dallas relocation was quoted at $4,000. Long-distance pricing is driven by volume, the services you add and the date rather than by the hour, so treat that as a budgeting reference and request a written estimate for your own inventory. All long-distance moves from our Houston branch are handled under US DOT 2569610 and MC #56316.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in Houston?

Not a residential moving permit as such, but Houston’s parking rules are stricter than most people expect. City Code Chapter 26 makes it unlawful to park or stand a commercial vehicle on the street between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. except during the act of loading or unloading, and Section 26-96 bars large vehicles from parking on any street in a residential district, with active loading and unloading as the defense. Amendments approved in 2023 extended the two-hour street parking limit to large vehicles and raised the fine for large-vehicle violations from $60 to $150. In practice the truck works continuously and then leaves rather than sitting at the curb. The city does designate commercial vehicle loading zones and issue loading zone permits for the urban core. What also needs arranging is private access: because Houston has no zoning, your street is governed by deed restrictions and a civic association or HOA, and towers frequently require a certificate of insurance, a reserved freight elevator and an assigned loading dock.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Houston has no zoning — so what rules actually apply to my move?

Private ones, mostly, and that catches people out. There’s no zoning map that tells you what happens on your block; land use here is governed by deed restrictions, and they’re enforced by a civic association, an HOA or a management company rather than the city. That’s who decides whether a truck can stage on the street, what hours work is permitted, and how gate access works. The city’s parking ordinance still applies on top of that. The practical advice is the same either way: call your civic association or management office the same week you book and ask what they require, then tell us. We’ll plan the placement and the crew size around it.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Should I move during hurricane season?

People move through it every year, but plan for it. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, which overlaps the busiest moving months. We watch the forecast on booked dates and will reschedule rather than load a household into a storm — safety first is not a slogan for a crew of firefighters. If your date falls in that window, build a contingency day into your plan, keep documents and irreplaceable items with you rather than on the truck, and if you’re storing between homes, ask any provider where the facility sits relative to the floodplain before you sign.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can you move me into a Galleria or downtown high-rise?

Yes, and this is the part to sort out first. Most Houston towers require a certificate of insurance naming specific entities, a freight elevator reserved to a fixed window and an assigned loading dock, and some want crew names at the security desk in advance. Send us your building’s requirements when you book and we’ll have the certificate issued before the date. Confirm with the management office whether a COI is needed, exactly which companies must be named on it, and how long the elevator window is — that window is what determines the crew size we assign.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Will your truck fit at my building?

Most of our fleet is 26-foot fully enclosed box trucks, with some 28-foot trucks plus the cab. Those need at least 13 feet of overhead clearance across the full 8-foot width, and any driving or parking surface has to support 26,000 pounds. In practice the truck works continuously and then leaves. The city does designate commercial vehicle loading zones and issue loading zone permits for the urban core.
