The fast version is a ground-floor home in Pflugerville where the truck parks at the door and the crew walks fifteen feet. The slow version is a Rainey Street high-rise where the truck stops at an assigned dock, one freight elevator is reserved for a three-hour window, and every carton makes the same long carry — or a Westlake house where the driveway is too steep and narrow for a 26-foot truck and everything shuttles up from the street. Access moves the number far more than room count does. Tell us the building, the floor, the elevator and the driveway when you request an estimate, and the estimate will land much closer to the invoice.

A note on how you pay. Rates are generally quoted with a cash or check discount applied. Credit cards are accepted, but the discount does not apply to card payments. We take cash, check, cashier’s check, money order and all major credit cards. A service deposit is due at booking; the amount depends on whether the move is local or long distance and how many trucks and movers are assigned. Your written estimate is the authority on what’s included — ask your moving consultant to confirm crew size, hours and coverage before you book.

Long-distance and statewide moves from Austin

Long-distance moves aren’t priced by the hour. They go wrong on where the truck can legally stand, on a Hill Country driveway a 26-foot truck can’t climb, and on which week of the year you picked. Here’s what we plan around before the truck leaves Howard Lane.

Austin regulates loading more actively than any other city we work. The Commercial Vehicle Loading ordinance in Austin City Code Chapter 12-5 lets the city issue a Commercial Vehicle Loading (CVL) permit, which allows a permitted vehicle to load and unload from designated curbside spaces, commercial loading zones and metered parking areas — citywide, not only downtown. Separately, Section 12-5-9 restricts parking vehicles over 9,000 pounds on certain streets, and our loaded box trucks are rated well above that. This is worth asking any Austin mover about before you book.

Three streets where loading is banned outright. The city prohibits loading and unloading on Cesar Chavez Street, Congress Avenue and Lamar Boulevard at all times, and blocking a bike lane, a transit priority lane or a single-lane roadway to load is prohibited everywhere. If your building fronts one of those three, the move happens from an authorized side street or the building’s own dock, and that changes the carry distance and the crew size. We work that out before the date, not on it.

Hill Country access is the constraint nobody expects. In West Lake Hills, Lakeway, Bee Cave, The Hills and around Lake Travis, the limiting factor is rarely the house — it’s the approach. Steep switchback driveways, low limestone-and-oak canopy, narrow private roads and unpaved surfaces routinely mean a 26-foot truck stays on the street and the crew shuttles. That’s a real cost difference, and it’s why we ask about the driveway rather than just the address.

Truck size and clearance. Our fleet is fully enclosed box trucks — most are 26 feet, some are 28 feet plus the cab. A truck that size needs at least 13 feet of overhead clearance across the full 8-foot width, and every driving and parking surface has to hold 26,000 pounds. That rules out most downtown and Domain parking garages, some carports, and soft or caliche ground after rain.

High-rise and managed-community requirements. Towers and managed communities downtown, on Rainey Street, in the Seaholm and Second Street districts, along South Lamar and at The Domain routinely require a certificate of insurance on file, a freight elevator reserved to a fixed window and a loading dock assigned before a crew is allowed on site. Call the management office the same week you book and confirm three things: whether a COI is required, exactly which entities have to be named on it, and how long the elevator window is. That window determines the crew size we assign.

The Austin calendar is unlike anywhere else in Texas. Beyond the usual crunch of weekends, month-ends and the summer stretch, this city closes streets for events. SXSW in March and Austin City Limits across two October weekends make central Austin and the Zilker area genuinely difficult, and the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix pulls traffic southeast in the same October window. Add UT move-in in August, when tens of thousands of student beds turn over at once. If your date is flexible, a midweek, mid-month move outside those windows is easier to book and buys you a wider arrival window. If it’s fixed, book early — crews commit weeks out.

Portable containers are a different permit problem. If you’re planning to use a portable storage container rather than a truck, placing it in the public right-of-way in Austin requires a Temporary Use of Right-of-Way permit, and the downtown coordination zone adds further approvals. A container in your own driveway generally doesn’t. Worth knowing before you assume it’s the cheaper option.

Texas summer. A July load-out in Austin is a different job from a February one. Those figures cover the crew, the truck, loading and unloading, pad-wrapping, basic furniture disassembly and reassembly, and Texas-standard released value protection at $0.60 per pound per item. Packing services and materials, a fuel or travel fee based on total distance, specialty item handling, and Full Value Protection are billed separately. Rates are generally quoted with a cash or check discount that doesn’t apply to credit card payments.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in Austin?

Austin regulates commercial loading more actively than most Texas cities, so this is worth asking any mover. Austin City Code Chapter 12-5 allows the city to issue a Commercial Vehicle Loading permit, which lets a permitted vehicle load and unload from designated curbside spaces, commercial loading zones and metered parking areas citywide. Section 12-5-9 separately restricts parking vehicles over 9,000 pounds on certain streets. Loading and unloading is prohibited at all times on Cesar Chavez Street, Congress Avenue and Lamar Boulevard, and blocking a bike lane, transit priority lane or single-lane roadway to load is prohibited everywhere. Separately, if you plan to place a portable storage container in the public right-of-way, that requires a Temporary Use of Right-of-Way permit from the city; a container in your own driveway generally does not. What also needs arranging is private access: towers and managed communities frequently require a certificate of insurance, a reserved freight elevator and an assigned loading dock.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can your truck get up a Hill Country driveway?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on the approach rather than the house. Around West Lake Hills, Lakeway, Bee Cave, The Hills and Lake Travis, steep switchback driveways, low tree canopy, narrow private roads and unpaved surfaces routinely mean a 26-foot truck stays on the street and the crew shuttles items down. That’s a genuine difference in hours and crew size, which is why we ask about the driveway, the turning space and the overhead clearance rather than just the address. Send a photo of the approach with your estimate request and we’ll tell you honestly which way it will go.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can you move me into a downtown or Rainey Street high-rise?

Yes, and this is the part to sort out first. Most Austin towers require a certificate of insurance naming specific entities, a freight elevator reserved to a fixed window and an assigned loading dock, and some want crew names at the security desk in advance. Send us your building’s requirements when you book and we’ll have the certificate issued before the date. Confirm with the management office whether a COI is needed, exactly which companies must be named on it, and how long the elevator window is — that window is what determines the crew size we assign. If the building fronts Cesar Chavez, Congress or Lamar, the loading also has to happen from an authorized side street or the building’s own dock.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Will your truck fit at my building?

Most of our fleet is 26-foot fully enclosed box trucks, with some 28-foot trucks plus the cab. Those need at least 13 feet of overhead clearance across the full 8-foot width, and any driving or parking surface has to support 26,000 pounds. Downtown and Domain parking garages, some carports, and soft or caliche ground after rain are the usual problems in Austin. Tell us the property type and access when you book and we’ll match the truck to the site rather than discovering the issue on move day.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Should I avoid moving during SXSW, ACL or the F1 weekend?

If you can, yes — and if you can’t, book much earlier than you think you need to. SXSW in March and Austin City Limits across two October weekends make central Austin and the Zilker area genuinely difficult to work, and the Formula 1 race pulls heavy traffic southeast in the same October stretch. Add UT move-in in August, when tens of thousands of student beds turn over at once. None of these make a move impossible, but they compress the window, they affect where the truck can stand, and they fill crews weeks in advance. A midweek, mid-month date outside those periods is easier to book and buys you a wider arrival window.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
What counts as a local move in Austin?

A local move is generally anything within a 50- to 100-mile radius of your current address, which covers moves inside Austin and across to Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Hutto, Buda, San Marcos, Lakeway, Bee Cave and Marble Falls. Confirm with the management office whether a COI is needed, exactly which companies must be named on it, and how long the elevator window is, because that window determines the crew size we assign.
