Moving
Tips
Feel free to print these moving tips
to help you during your moving process
General
Moving Tips:
-
Summer is "peak" moving season. If you
can be flexible about when you move, don't wait
until the summer. Also keep in mind that the first
and last weeks of the month are extra-busy for
all movers.
-
Specify
the exact date you want to move and when it will
be convenient for an agent to visually survey
your household and prepare an estimate.
-
Tour
your house before the agent arrives. Check from
attic to basement, and determine what will be
moved and what will be discarded. Show your agent
everything you will be moving.
-
If
you plan to do the packing yourself, start collecting
suitable containers and packing materials from
free sources like stores or others who have just
moved
-
Set
packing goals and deadlines. Have all packing
complete by moving day.
-
If
you are being relocated at your company's request,
find out what portion of your moving expenses
will be paid by the company. If your company has
a written moving policy, ask for a copy.
-
Designate
one drawer of a dresser for sheets so that you
won't have to rummage through boxes for these
essentials the first night in your new home.
-
Pack
your current phone book to take with you. You
may need to make calls to residents or businesses
back in your former hometown
-
Before
packing medicine and toiletry items, make sure
that their caps and lids have been tightly secured.
-
Remove
bulbs before packing your lamps.
-
Small
items are best protected and easier to move when
in a box. Please limit box weight to less than
30 lbs. Items boxed by you are not insured in
any way. We will make every effort to protect
the belongings inside.
-
Pack
heavy items in small boxes, light items in larger
boxes.
-
Hanging
clothes should be left on the hanger and taped
together at the base of the hook, 7-10 max. For
added protection, cover the clothes in a plastic
garbage bag.
-
Label
your boxes with either their destination or their
contents. This will enable us to quickly place
them in the appropriate rooms and save you time
and money.
-
Place
pictures in boxes between sheets and blankets
to give them added protection.
-
Plates
and records should be packed on end vertically
rather than placed flat and stacked.
Appliances / Electronics;
-
If
you don't already have one, make a list of all
appliances/devices by model/serial number.
-
After
you've thoroughly cleaned and dried the inside
of your refrigerator, put a handful of fresh coffee,
baking soda or charcoal in a sock or nylon stocking
and place it inside to keep the interior smelling
fresh.
-
Washing
machines and dryers should be emptied and unfastened.
We can assist with this, and, if needed, hook
them up at your new location. Front-loading washers
should be secured for moving according to manufacturer's
specifications. If not, we will move them, but
accept no liability for damage.
-
Refrigerators
and freezers should be emptied and allowed to
defrost 48 hours prior to moving.
-
Electronic
items, stereos, and computers should be boxed
in original boxes and packaging if possible.
-
Unplug
all electronic equipment such as television sets,
home computers, stereos, etc., 24 hours in advance
of a move so they will be at room temperature
on moving day. Moving a TV set and other electronic
equipment in which heat is still retained could
cause internal damage.
-
Upon
arrival at your new home, let your PC "acclimate"
itself to room temperature before plugging it
in.
-
At
destination, you might want to consider having
the TV and VCR hooked up first to occupy the kids
while the rest of the van is being unloaded.
